Amazon LinkI began to think that couples who were married and happy were just married and untested. Maybe they just hadn’t come across real trouble yet. Ed and I’d been happy because we both wanted the same thing for so long: each other. And I always thought we were very much alike. It was easy to compromise because neither had to budget that far to get to the compromise point. But Ed’s mandate for fatherhood changed all that. I wanted him at least to acknowledge that it had become an obsession, that not everybody would be willing to risk everything for it.

Amazon LinkIn any case, there’s nothing to be done to prepare for the test results either, except the usual stuff, on a daily basis: trying to act like a good husband, a good teacher, a decent human being. Not that behaving decently will affect the results – but it might help give us the strength to face them if they are bad.

Amazon Link“What I did is too odd, too unusual, and it’s not even recognized in a court of law,” I said. “I had no rights to the human being that was growing inside of me. He wasn’t mine. I couldn’t keep him. I could kill him, but I couldn’t keep him. There is some serious irony in that. I meant nothing. I’m not sure I could have been made to feel more insignificant. I feel like nothing.”

Amazon LinkIf fertility cuts to the very core of what it means to be a woman, then virility cuts to the very core of what it means to be a man. So to have a virtual stranger not only questioning that virility but also ask you to prove it by masturbating in a cup can be disconcerting, to say the least. Believe me, I get it, I’ve been there, I know where you’re coming from. But here the God’s honest truth: When it comes to infertility treatments, the “real man” isn’t the one who can defend his machismo to the bitter end. The real man is the one who can swallow his awkwardness and embarrassment and do what he has to do for the betterment of his family.
